The 17-year-old model - the daughter of singer Lionel Richie and his second wife Diane Alexander - was selected to front the pop icon's fashion line last summer and it was a dream come true because she considers Madonna to be a ''good role model'' due to her being fiercely ''independent''.

Speaking to the new issue of ES Magazine, which is out this Thursday (31.03.16), about her collaboration with the 57-year-old music legend, she said: ''I'm obsessed with Madonna, it was insane and overwhelming for me. I have met her several times with my dad. I think she is a good role model because she is independent and strong.''

Although she is carving out a successful career in the fashion world for herself, the teenage beauty has grown up around the fame game, due to her family.

Sofia - whose sister is Nicole Richie - is used to the pressures of celebrity culture and she doesn't let the ''negative side'' of the industry, such as the paparazzi, get to her.

She said: ''If they see my car they are just going to follow. One time there were so many of them I couldn't move. I am a small girl and it scared my dad a little.

''Another time the same person would follow me over and over and over again and it turned out that someone had put a tracker under my car. There is a negative side to everything, but I don't let that get to me.''

Sofia's work with Material Girl came about because she became friends with Madonna's daughter Lourdes, 19.

She previously said: ''I have a few friends in common with Madonna's daughter. And then one day, I just heard, like, hey Madonna and her daughter want you to shoot for their line and I was like, 'Wow, that's so crazy'.
